March 15, 2002 Update: Hooray! We finally completed the task of migrating all the
Links pages to the new database. In the process, we discovered that there are 391
entires in our links list. It seems like it took forever, but actually the whole project took one
month, from Valentine's Day to today.
Work continues on the SimsHost project. We hope to be
able to open the doors at SimsHost in mid-to-late June 2002.
March 6, 2002 Update: Added an answer to the frequently asked question,
How is SimsHost different from existing pay sites?
We also finished migrating some more of the Links pages, and are currently kind of busy
with a project to update all 139 of the SimGoddesses pages.
Speaking of SimGoddesses, you will now find Antoine's
The Sims Object ID program hosted there.
If you run The Sims on Windows, you want this program!
March 3, 2002 Update: Most of our activities have been going on behind the scenes. We are still
migrating the Links to a different database setup in WebSite Director and picking up
changes as we go.
We have also been concentrating on designing and coding the SimsHost system; and
in the process developing a lot more respect for the folks who got systems like this working on the existing pay
February 16, 2002 Update: Today we have the honor and privilege of welcoming Wytch's Brew to the family of sites hosted by Moon Sims! This is the last site we expect to add
to Moon Sims; but anyone looking for free hosting for a Sims site should read the latest about
site hosting. Also migrated page 13 of the Links to the new database.
February 14, 2002 Update: If you notice some inconsistencies in the URL's for the Links
pages, don't panic. We are in the process of migrating the links pages one at a time to the new database.
In other news: We're getting frustrated with the rate at which Sims sites are dropping off line, and have decided to go forward
with the Mother Of All Sims Sites (MORASS) concept that we discussed several months ago in the newsgroup. MORASS is just a
working title for a subscriber-supported free hosting service for Sims sites.
If you have a Sims site and would be interested in hosting your site on such a system, please send a note to Greg. We need to know the name of the site, name of the webmaster, and an estimate of how much disk space it requires. The estimate doesn't have to be accurate, but is it 10 MB, 100 MB, or 1000 MB? If you have some real bandwidth usage data, that would be a big help, too.
Please note that we will simply ignore any correspondence whining about the concept of pay sites.
Also note that we have surely thought of every bad pun on "MORASS" that you can come up with. (On the other hand, those puns
are still funny, so if you're a webmaster who's interested in this service and just can't resist the pun, what the heck,
go for it!) We really only want to hear from interested webmasters at this time.
February 10, 2002 Update: This wasn't an easy decision, especially with so many sites being evicted
by their hosting services, but today Greg updated his
site hosting letter to announce that we cannot add any more Sims sites to the Moon Sims
family. See the letter for details.
February 6, 2002 Update: We've done a lot of work in the background that, if we did it right, will be evident
to you only in continued good response from the Moon Sims server. The Moon Sims server, including the hosted sites, is
currently running about 2 to 3 million hits a day. Another site is a-building, so stay tuned for further announcements.
Reorganizing the Links database continues, and you'll find some updated sites there.
January 17, 2002 Update: Carla added a link to her tutorial on
How to Make Skins for The Sims in the Tech section. It's not
done yet, but you can work through the first 18 pages. That's enough to show you to get a skin done. We have invested quite a
bit of time in changes you should not even notice, reorganizing the database of Links, where you will
also find many new sites and updated entries.
On the Trollops and Johns site you will find two new pages of outfits for
your trollops and a whole household full of furniture from Sim Goddess Byline!
To round it out, for no adequately explained reason we opened a
Moons Sims Yahoo! Group today. We hope this will turn
out to be an interesting place to discuss what it will be like to live in the moon and how we can present that vision in
The Sims. (But mostly we suspect it was because Greg was jealous that Bibi and Mintha both had Yahoo! Groups and he didn't. :)
January 3, 2002 Update: It's just a little premature because she's still getting the site on line, but we
are eager to welcome Mintha's Sim Garden to the family of sites hosted on
Moon Sims. One more site is a-building; stay tuned for further news.
There's a recall on Samantha (not her real name)'s skins on the
Trollops and Johns site. The change
won't affect Macintosh users, but Windows users will probably need to download the skins again; they were inadvertently
zipped up with MacBinary encoding. And yup, we made even more updates and additions to the links.
We will be moving to a new, upgraded server in a couple of weeks. We plan to run the old server and the new one
in parallel during the change-over, so if all goes well, you won't even notice the change.
December 27, 2001 Update: Greg's punishment for winning the first round of
Trollops and Johns in the pre-Hot Date division was to make a skin
for our first official trollop. Follow the link in the previous sentence to find Samantha (not her real name);
there's no way we're going to add that web site to our navigation menu! And of course we took advantage of having time
off during the holidays to add some more links.
December 24, 2001 Update: Merry Christmas! We got a little distracted by the
Trollops and Johns game that arose from the
Sim Goddesses forum on Yahoo,
but still found time to make updates to most of the links pages in the past couple of weeks.
We also updated the note about hosting Sims sites and added a link in the "hosted sites" box. The bottom line is that
we are not adding any new sites until we are sure we can handle the bandwidth.
December 11, 2001 Update: Discovered an html blunder on page 16 of the
links that kept several sites from being displayed. Carla is working on a detailed tutorial on how
to make skins for The Sims. It's not done yet, but you can preview the first 15 pages
December 6, 2001 Update: Added "Default Skins" to the navigation menu at the right-hand side of the page.
If you want to recover from Whatever You Did to mess up the default swimsuits, formals, pajamas, or nude skins, you want
to have these files on hand. They are also very useful for making your own skins.
December 5, 2001 Update: What better way to bring the Objects section on line than
with a fantastic moon rover, designed by Boris Rubanovich and created for The Sims by Dincer Hepguler.
December 3, 2001 Update: Updated the tour
guides' pajama mesh. The mesh already had DOS line breaks, but we updated the instructions to explain how Windows users
can use this file to replace their standard pajama mesh. Also added a download for the C338 head mesh that Caddy uses; it's
linked from the picture of her face on the tour guides' page.
Happy news: The Wage of Sim is back on line!
And for the icing on the case, so is Steffan's Sims!
December 2, 2001 Update: It's done! We've updated all of the CMX and SKN files to use DOS line breaks, so all
of the meshes distributed with the Moon Sims skins should now work fine on both Windows and Macintosh. If you have any problems
with these skins, either with File Cop rejecting them or the skins not showing up in the game, please write to us and tell us
about it. While we were at it, we continued our links-obsessed behavior by adding several new sites and updates in the
Please note that we have not modified the clothing ensembles to work with Hot Date. We don't plan to do this
until we have a way to test skins in the game, and that won't happen until they release the Macintosh version of Hot Date.
December 1, 2001 Update: We've narrowed the problem with the meshes down to the lack of a linefeed character in
the CMX files, and will get them fixed as soon as we can. Several new sites and updates in the Links,
especially page 12.
November 22, 2001 News: We are puzzling over why File Cop (which only runs under Windows) doesn't like the CMX
files for the tour guides' B351 or B995 bodies. Also, these meshes don't show up in the game on most Windows machines.
Since they work fine on a Mac, sleuthing this problem is a slow road. We have narrowed the problem down to three possible
causes: (1) using a cr to terminate a line rather than cr/lf, (2) using "mb" for the .skn name than "01", or (3) changing
the xksin name from "-pelvis-mbody" to just "-body". Stay tuned for further developments.
November 22, 2001 Update: Happy Thanksgiving! We adding page 4 to Walls and have new
sites and updates on more than half of the Links pages.
November 19, 2001 Update: The mystery revealed: Last week we added Livin-It-Up to the list of sites hosted by Moon Sims. It's subtle because the menu item that used to read "Livin-It-Up Master Mesh List" is now two separate links.
Caddy added a note about how we can make pressurized
habitats with Sims objects in Tech this week, and Greg came out of hiding long enough to add some more notes to the wish list for Livin' Luna objects we hope someone will make.
Of course there are also lots of updates and new sites in Links.
November 12, 2001 Update: We made a very subtle, but important, change throughout the site.
Can you spot it? Hint: It's in the table of hosted sites.
There are a some new entries to the Links, too.
November 10, 2001 Update: Lise Sørensen's wonderful SimLove comes on line
today among the hosted sites. Look in the navigation column on the right-hand side of any page on Moon Sims for the
list of all seven hosted sites that are currently on line.
We've also been busy updating and and adding new entries to the Links.
November 4, 2001 Update: Caddy added an essay on how to
install new skins into your game. It's in the Tech section. Now that tutorials at
the Wage of Sim are off line, we decided this was especially important.
November 3, 2001 Update: We are pleased to announce that we have the privilege of hosting
Sim Goddesses here on Moon Sims. How appropriate that the currently
featured item at Sim Goddesses is Byline's "Moonstruck" bathroom! The site came on line just today, and we
have added it to our navigation table. This is one of b'b'big sites mentioned in the October 30 update. And, it's
probably no surprise that we have made several updates to our Links in the past few days.
In other news, Bil Simser, the creator of Blueprint, is porting all of his utilities for The Sims to the Macintosh!
Beta testing should start very soon. Bil says his software will continue to be available for free, even though
much of Sim Freaks (who host Bil's stuff) has recently changed to a subscription service.
October 30, 2001 Update: We have made a few updates to the Links, but most of our time
these past several days has been invested in helping get the hosted sites on line. We've temporarily suspended adding new
hosted sites until a couple of more big sites come on line, so that we can get some data on how the big sites affect our
bandwidth and server load.
October 21, 2001 News: We have to honor of announcing that Moon Sims is now host to dincer hepguler thesims site. We have added another feature to our navigation column listing all the sites for which we provide web space. Additional sites are still in the process of
being built. Today we also added the Art section, which currently contains only a set of paintings with
numbers on them, designed to help identify which bed belongs to which of your sims.
For more information about free hosting for Sims sites, please read
Greg's letter about site hosting. We updated the letter today with more details about the
WebSite Director Express interface and information we need to set up the web space. 10 Nov 01: Please note that we have
suspended the offer for hosting new sites for a few weeks until we get some solid data on the load that the currently hosted
sites place on our server.
October 18, 2001 News: The server was down from about 3:00 PM to 8:40 PM US Pacific time today for a memory
upgrade and reconfiguration of the hard disk. The outage lasted much longer than anticipated but we're back on line now,
livelier than ever!
October 13, 2001 Update: Added page 3 to Walls, where we almost find out why the dance club at the Raffles Hotel is called "The Wreck."
October 11, 2001 Update: Most of our effort for the past few days has gone into rehosting verylisa's Master Mesh List in response to a request for help from Livin-It-Up. We added a new skin of Osama bin Laden with his camo jacket in Sociopaths, and the Links have grown to 16 pages!
October 2, 2001 Update: By special request, we have added a skin of Osama bin Laden. We had to create a special section for him, called Sociopaths. Because this skin is quite a ways outside the scope of Moon Sims, and we hope it will be completely foreign to people living in the moon, we do not intend to link to this web page from anywhere else in the Moon Sims menus.
September 27, 2001 Update: We are experimenting with a slight change in the look of the site, replacing the images in the navigation column with styled text with hope that the web pages will load a lot faster. We've added dozens of new entries in Links, and Caddy updated her essay on Fundamentals of Objects in the Sims.
September 19, 2001 Update: We've added new entries on every page of Links, and Caddy added the MOO progammer's quick-reference sheet to Tech.
September 15, 2001 Update: In remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11 and in sympathy for those who grieve for them, we added the tour guides' mourning dress to the Women section. We have also added a memorial on our front page. Other updates are in the web management system queue, and we will get them published as soon as we can.
September 8, 2001 Update: The Women section added another of Carla's outfits, a sparkling silver skinsuit with a matching cape similar in style to her own tour guide outfit. Two more sites added in Links.
September 7, 2001 Update: Carla added a new skin with a Moon Sims t-shirt in Women. Greg updated his offer to host Sims sites on Moon Sims with notes on our copyright policy. We've added three more sites and reviewed a few more in Links. Caddy added a page where you can download a Macintosh-compatible pajama mesh that matches the tour guides' body shape.
September 5, 2001 Sims Web News: None of this affects Moon Sims or any sites hosted on our server, but there is a lot of shuffling going on in the network of Sims web sites.
TerraShare has changed their banner to insist that they will shut down the entire terrashare.com domain any day now, so expect broken links all over the net. In case you missed it, Velaria's Simgirls are now hosted right here on Moon Sims in the wake of the TerraShare shutdown. We're still wondering where Uncle George went to.
All the sites hosted by Sim Eden are in transition to a new ISP, so right now they all just come up with the gamigo.de home page. Those links should start working again as soon as the new domain addresses propogate to all the domain name servers in the world.
Homestead.com changed their rules, requiring that content providers start paying for their web hosting services, forcing many other Sims sites to shut down. We are updating links as fast as we find out about them.
In related news, our offer of free web hosting for Sims sites is still open. There's still plenty of room at the inn!
September 3, 2001 Update: Happy Labor Day! Carla added her notes on difficulties with designing floors in her Weird Floors Room in Tech. The entire staff waxed enthusiastic over the discovery of the Super Sims web site in Russia. Our review is on links page 7 in Links. Predictably, this lead to the discovery of even more Sims sites, so Pasiphae drives us all on onward in the never-ending quest for Livin' Luna!
September 2, 2001 Update: James Gholston gave us another great set of walls and floors, this time in polished basalt. They're on page 2 of Walls, where you also get to visit The Grotto on Brasket Island. Caddy added an essay--she insists it is not a tutorial--on the Fundamentals of Objects in The Sims. It's in Tech. This time around we added only two more sites and half a dozen reviews in Links, so we think we are narrowing in on having a comprehensive catalog of Sims sites.
August 28, 2001 Update: James Gholston lit up the Floors section with his contribution of eight floor tiles you can use to create the surface of Luna in your Sims game! Meanwhile, in Links we're all eagerly anticipating the day that the Sim Eden network completes their current rehosting project.
August 26, 2001 Update: Caddy added some more irreverant advice to Sims webmasters. We've updated the navigation sidebar to include Walls and Floors. (The Floors button is gray because there's nothing there yet, but we have big plans. Getting the images to tile correctly within the limitations of The Sims has proven to be quite challenging.)
August 25, 2001 Update: The Boys section came on line today with Carla's rendition of Pasiphae's nephew, Arthur. We created a new Walls section, where you can download a set of walls that depict windows overlooking the original Moonbase Artemis. This section is so new that we haven't yet even done the graphics to add it to the navigation sidebar. The growth of the Links section seems to be tapering off; we have added only about half a dozen new sites in the past three days.
August 22, 2001 Update: The dawn patrol added an archive of a male character wearing the Artemis Project t-shirt in Men. We're not ready to take your sims to the moon yet, but at least now they can show that they are helping to make the dream come true!
August 21, 2001 Update: Added skins with an adult female wearing a black t-shirt with the Artemis Project logo in Women. The male version of this outfit is in work. And, of course, added more links and site reviews in Links.
August 18, 2001 Update: The links pages grew so large that we had to split each of them in half so we could still fit them into WebSite Director's Online Edit feature! We are up to eight pages of links now. Nobody has counted how many sites we've found. There are so many sites we can't remember which ones we visited previously, so we decided to keep the dead ones in the list so that we can remember not to bother with them if we run across links to the in the future.
August 15, 2001 Update: The team is still wallowing in reviews of Sims web sites. We are having a lot of fun with this project, but that screaming you hear reverberating through the cavern is Caddy. She offers some advice to Sims webmasters in Tech.
August 12, 2001 Update: Pasiphae found several more Livin' Luna items on the web, and the team has reviewed dozens more of the sites listed in Links. During the search, download problems had Caddy climbing the walls, so she wrote a note about how to cope with Strategy Planet which also offers advice for Sims webmasters about hosting here on Moon Sims.
August 8, 2001 Update: STS-105 didn't fly today, but Caddy did! In Livin' Luna, Caddy shows us the general size and shape of her wings. And in Links Adam and the tour guides have reviewed several more web sites for Livin' Luna stuff.
August 6, 2001 Update: In Tech, Caddy tells us how easy it is to fix (and avoid) long filenames that crash The Sims.
August 5, 2001 Update: Caddy turned on the Tech section with the addition of a tutorial about how to create zip archives for Moon Sims characters and a reference list of the descriptions of the bots in ASI MOO.
August 3, 2001 Update: Added a test page to the Men section, where you can download Adam Selene and Bruce McIntyre. (You'll get to know them better as Moon Sims develops.)
July 31, 2001 Update: Added a test page to the Women section, where you can download the Tour Guides' evening gowns. Adam would appreciate hearing what you think about the layout for presenting clothes.
July 30, 2001 Update: Links! Lots of links! Pasiphae has been looking at Sims web sites all over the world in her search for Livin' Luna stuff. We still have a lot of sites to review, but you will find a few hundred links to other web sites in the Links section.
The tour guides have also been working on the Livin' Luna section, though there isn't anything new to see yet, and several members of the Moon Society around the world are puzzling over how to make objects for The Sims.
July 10, 2001 Update: Moon Sims is pleased and proud to announce that we have the privilege of hosting Velaria's Simgirls!
Many other great Sims sites have been displaced by the demise of TerraShare. If you know of a Sims site in need of a home, please do tell them about the open offer from Moon Sims to host them. There's still a lot of room left at the inn. Click here for details.
June 20, 2001 Update: With help from Cyberteams we got our URL working today. We have designed the basic signature and identity for the Moon Sims web site, and have received permission from 7 Deadly Sims, Velaria's Simgirls, and The Wage of Sim to use and distribute derivatives of their work as part of the site's identity package.
