Introduction

There are many approaches to skinning and meshmaking. Here are some links to tutorials and resources that you might find useful.

Thank you to the pioneers who figured it out in the first place, and made all these great tools and resources to make it easier for the rest of us.

General sites

Crash's Skins Shop -- A range of resources and tutorials on meshmaking and skinning from one of the best in the business, and a helpful forum.

The Wage of Sim -- All kinds of useful resources, including Sim file formats, changing default outfits, making skin sets, renaming files for Macintosh, and a guide to Maxis meshes.

Sims Toolbox -- Includes an explanation of the anatomy of a Sim, utility downloads, and animation information.

Body skinning tutorials

How to Make Your Own Skins -- Illustrated with a barwench shirt, skirt, and corset. Uses Photoshop. From the Cloth Menagerie.

Skin Tutorial -- Illustrated with a tube top and skirt outfit. Applicable to any graphics editor. From Groovy Sims.

Hanna Makes a Skin -- Illustrated with flared trousers and a halter top, showing an easy method to make versions for all three skin tones. Uses Photoshop. From SimSisters.

Skin Tutorial -- Illustrated with skirt, top, cardigan, necklace, and boots. Uses Photoshop. From Threnody.

Sims Skinning Tutorial -- Illustrated with Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four. Applicable to any graphics program. From DarkJared at the Skindex.

Skins Tutorial 1 -- Includes explanation of how to use SimShow, and how to change faces and hands. Uses Photoshop. From the Sims Resource.

Simple Skinning 101 -- A quick method for making skins for personal use. Uses PaintShop Pro. From Blue Nuku.

Head skinning tutorials and tools

Hanna Makes a Head -- Illustrated with a girl's head, showing how to adapt for all three skin tones. Uses Photoshop. From SimSisters.

Face Tutorial -- Shows how to convert a photograph to a Sims head skin, using Voyager's Tom Paris as a model. Applicable to any graphics program. From DarkJared at the Skindex.

Face Tutorial ñ Making Faces from Scratch -- Uses Corel PhotoPaint, FaceLift, and SimShow. By Erynn-Elisabeth McGuigan of SimGoddesses.

FaceLift and FaceLift Gold -- Maxis programs for making new heads. Results sometimes look very odd but can be tweaked with BodyWarp.

Meshmaking tutorials

TheSims Skins Tutorial -- Focuses on creating meshes for accessories and attachments, using a set of wings to illustrate. Includes hints for Milkshape 3D users. From Kelahn.

Tutorial -- Covers naming conventions, Skn->Obj, BodyWarp, making and attaching accessories, and taking screenshots. From Matt and Jenny's Sim Stuff.

Image editors

Photoshop -- The professional's choice, if you can afford it. A tryout version is available for download, but you cannot save files created with it (I think).

PaintShop Pro -- Many think it is just as good, or better than, Photoshop, and it is much cheaper. You can also buy it over the web.

The Gimp -- Pretty impressive for a free program.

Previewing tools

SimShow -- Maxis's program for previewing and importing skins.

Character Makeover Studio -- Another Maxis program for managing skins, discontinued by Maxis (presumably because they didn't want to fix the bugs), but still available from The Sims Resource.

SimPose -- A great tool for screenshots, since you can pose your Sims in all kinds of odd ways.

Meshmaking tools

Bodywarp -- A 3D skin previewing and warping application. From Spanki's Skin Shack.

Kelahn's Utilities -- Includes Skn->Obj, Far Extractor, support files, and details of new projects in the works.

FAR Edit -- Use this to extract Maxis meshes from FAR files.

Milkshape 3D -- A widely used 3D modeling program.

Anim8or -- Freeware 3D modeling program.

Ultimate 3D Links -- Many more resources for 3D modelers, including reviews, discussion forums, articles, tutorials, and links.

Changing default outfits

How to Customize Pajamas, Swimsuits and More -- By Eric Hammer, for the Sims Resource.

Renaming Pajamas and Swimwear -- From SimShop Online.

Base files

Nude Skin Bases -- From Threnody.

Base Skin Set -- Includes all sizes and skin tones. From the Sims Resource.
