We are specifically looking for things that look like they could have been produced in the Luna City Cavern 100 years from now. In general our reviews are focused much more on Livin' Luna than on the quality and content of all the other wonderful stuff offered on these web sites.
Pasiphae explains her Livin' Luna badge
Pasiphae says, "I hadn't intended my Livin' Luna badge to be an award, but it has sort of turned out that way.
"I wanted to use my Livin' Luna button to call your attention to sites where I've found items that fit into the Livin' Luna environment, but I have developed a rather strict set of criteria in addition to that.
"Here's what I think about before I put my badge next to the entry for a web site in our Links section:
- Does the web site offer Livin' Luna things for download?
You will find a lot more discussion of what could be made on the moon in the Livin' Luna section of the Moon Sims web. I'm looking for things that obviously could have been made on Luna, mostly from locally produced materials.
There are many outstanding web sites that offer things that don't fit the Livin' Luna criteria, so don't interpret the lack of my badge as a negative review. It only means that the site doesn't offer lots of moonstuff. I would guess that most simsmasters never even thought of trying to make things that fit a Livin' Luna theme, so except perhaps for those few who have encountered Moon Sims, the search for Livin' Luna items has been mostly serendipity.
- Is it high-quality work?
Evaluating quality is a judgement call, so I use my own standard: If it's something I would want in my game, then yes. If not, then no. It's as simple as that. I admire craftsmanship and attention to detail as much as ingenuity and orginality. Admittedly, my tastes, although quite eclectic, are my own. Yours may differ. If I have doubts, I turn to others (especially Carla) for this judgement call.
- Is the webcraft up to my standards?
I have a very simple standard here: If it means having to scrape Caddy off the ceiling with a putty knife, I won't put my Livin' Luna badge next to a web site's entry. (Keep in mind that in lunar gravity, it doesn't take much for her to hit the ceiling!) I respect Caddy's judgement on the quality of work on the design of a web site, and I have to agree that if you're going to go through all the work of creating a web site, it's worth the effort to make it as friendly to the user as you can.
On the other hand, if Caddy only grumbles a little bit, then the site meets the standard. Heck, not even Moon Sims meets all of her persnickety rules!
- Is the web site safe for kids to visit?
This is a sticky issue because personal tastes and beliefs vary so much. Here I'm looking for sites that would fit a PG-13 audience. If the site contains adult content, has the webmaster clearly marked it as such, and does the site also offer things that would be of interest to younger children?
You might have detected some dissention in the ranks about this. Many of us feel that it's unhealthy for young children to be exposed to excessive paranoia about what human bodies look like, but some (read: Adam) worry about offending the parents of pre-adolescent children in certain communities. It's not the kids we're worried about; it's the parents -- none of us has ever heard of a person who suffered any injury from learning at a young age what the human body really looks like.
We all agree on a few things that we don't want to expose young children to: overt sexual behavior, promoting the use of illegal drugs, reckless or rude behavior, hate mongering, and extreme emotional or physical violence. In general, I won't even add such web sites to our list of links, and certainly won't call your attention to them with my Livin' Luna badge.
As for simple nudity, we reached a compromise: If it's something you're likely to view on a public beach in the USA, we're OK with it. (And Adam will just have to grind his teeth while he admires the view!)
A badge for webmasters
"That's about all there is to it, but it adds up to pretty strict requirements. So if the Livin' Luna badge does appear next to your web site on the Moon Sims list, you have our sincere thanks for your outstanding work, and for providing us with things that help illustrate what it will be like to live in the moon!
"If your web site has earned the Livin' Luna emblem and you would like to display it web site, you are welcome to do so! Below is the original badge, complete with the name of the Moon Sims web. If you use this emblem, please link it to http://moonsims.asi.org/.
"You may copy this image to your web site, or if you want to save a smidgeon of bandwidth, just pull it from ours. Here is some HTML code that you can copy onto your web pages.
width="88" height="31" border="0"
"I left the name of our web site out of the Livin' Luna badge that I'm using in the links list because it got to be so repetitive, but I think it would be a good idea to use the version with 'Moon Sims' on other sites so that your visitors will know what it's about.
"On the other hand, if you like the other version of the Livin' Luna badge better, go for it! If you link it to Moon Sims, I'm sure your visitors will very quickly figure out what it all means. The version that just says 'Livin' Luna' is at http://moonsims.asi.org/images/livinlunabutton.gif. It's 96x24.
"Where and how you use these buttons on your web site is up to you. They would work fine displayed along with all the other trophies you have earned for your excellent work, and here's an idea to consider: You could display the Livin' Luna button or a derivative of it next to the items in your catalog that fit the Livin' Luna theme! You decide. Here are some guidelines for Livin' Luna objects, from the Livin' Luna section.
"While we're on the subject of links to Moon Sims, I should tell you that the web page with Moon Sims buttons and banners is in the Links section.
The search for Livin' Luna
"You will probably find lots of moon-appropriate goodies on other fine Sims web sites, so you can help me in my search! When you find something that fits, please post a note in the Moon Sims Yahoo group. Please include the exact URL for the pages that display the objects you recommend. And, of course, you will find lots of nifty things on the wonderful web sites list in the Moon Sims Links that will make your Sims happy, even if they don't happen to be visiting my home town at the moment!
"Thank you, everyone, for helping us take our Sims to the realm beyond the sky!"
